Why Visit Sainte-Chapelle?
Sainte-Chapelle Highlights
Stained-Glass Windows
Sainte-Chapelle is famous for its total of 15 stained-glass windows, covering almost the entire surface of the walls, boasting an area of around 600 square-meters. Originating from the 13th century, these windows depict over 1,100 different biblical scenes, ranging from Creation to the New Testament. When the sun pierces through these windows, the chapel is bathed in a kaleidoscopic play of colors, leaving visitors in sheer wonder.
Architecture
The chapel is a masterpiece of the Rayonnant period of Gothic style, marked by its slender design and extensive use of stained-glass to create an ambiance of celestial light. The impressive pointed vault, upheld by slender columns and intricate arches, underscores the building’s height and grandeur. The finely crafted stonework is almost completely overshadowed by the massive windows, allowing the stained-glass to truly shine.
Ancient Relic Shrine
King Louis IX of France commissioned the Sainte-Chapelle to be built between 1242 and 1248 to serve as a shrine for his collection of Passion relics, including what was believed to be the Crown of Thorns of Christ. Unfortunately, many relics were lost during the French Revolution, but the original shrine still stands and is definitely worth a visit. You can locate it in the Upper Chapel, where its enduring presence serve as a reminder of the chapel’s rich past.
